Tenants’ insurance is a product especially for those who are renting a property. Two main types of cover are available: tenants’ contents insurance and tenancy liability.

Tenants’ contents insurance provides cover for personal possessions in the event they are damaged, destroyed or lost due to fire, theft, accidental damage, or any other insured risk. Tenancy liability insurance covers accidental damage that occurs to the landlord’s contents and items that are provided for tenants to use.

It is possible for tenants to choose tenancy liability cover, or a dual cover policy, comprising tenants’ contents insurance and tenancy liability.

It’s important for tenants to realise that although your landlord may have taken out buildings insurance to cover the property itself, they are not liable to insure any of your personal possessions in the property, unless your tenancy agreement specifically states such cover is provided.
